Guesthouse Tessen Guide   2020
Brochure containing information on local attractions and instruction on how to get around in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka.
The Client
Tessen is a traditional guesthouse in Shizuoka Prefecture (Japan) complete with rock garden, tea room and tatami floors. By hosting community events and classes they strive to share their sense of culture with guests from around the world,
The Goal
Shimizu is not a particularly popular destination for foreign tourists, but the many museums, shrines and natural sites offer incredible potential. Guesthouse Tessen wanted to create an English language guide for their visitors that could improve the quality of their time in the city by offering tips on where to eat, what to see and how to move about.
The Product
Inspired by byobu screens, hanko and brush calligraphy - pillars of Japan's visual identity - this brochure is designed to feel like an extension of the tradition Guesthouse Tessen prides itself on. Nihondaira's iconic view is segmented into colourful panels on the outside which fold-out in an orihon style to reveal a locality map at the brochure's interior.
The Connectivity
Few travellers travel without their cellphones. Pairing the brochure with a curated Google Map list of attractions, the product is able to direct readers to a responsive map where new recommendations are easily added and business hours kept up to date.
